Mike Patton muove i primi passi nel mondo della musica all'Eureka High School, la scuola della sua cittadina (Eureka, ovest della California), dove suona nei Mr. Bungle (per approfondimenti vi rimando al topic) già intorno ai 16 anni.
Prima di incidere il primo album omonimo con la band di cui sopra, Patton entra a far parte dei Faith No More nel 1989 dopo che Jim Martin (all'epoca chitarrista della band di San Francisco) ascolta una demo dei Mr. Bungle e rimane favorevolmente colpito dalle doti del giovane cantante.
Per Patton, a soli 20 anni, arrivano le grandi platee, MTV, i dischi di platino, la notorietà grazie ad un album come The Real Thing, e la definitiva consacrazione come uno dei migliori (per molti IL migliore) cantanti rock degli anni Novanta grazie ai successivi lavori (Angel Dust del 1992, King For A Day del 1995, Album Of The Year del 1997).
Le sue qualità sono l'estrema abilità nello spaziare tra i generi vocali più diversi, la grande estensione vocale e il modo in cui riesce a innovare il ruolo del cantante rock, diventando un modello di riferimento imprescindibile per diversi colleghi negli anni a seguire.
Nel 1998 i Faith No More, dopo aver lasciato ai posteri una serie di concerti indimenticabili e una discografia stellare, si sciolgono e per Patton inizia una seconda era.
John Zorn è la figura chiave nella carriera di Mike, è infatti l’incontro con il musicista di origine ebraica che pone le basi per la sua carriera post FNM. I due si incontrano per la prima volta nel 1991, in occasione delle registrazioni del primo disco omonimo dei Mr. Bungle (John Zorn ne è il produttore). Tra i due iniziano contatti, scambi di idee, collaborazioni live e su disco (collaborazioni che continuano tutt'oggi). In particolare Patton presta molta attenzione, in questi anni, al cantante Yamatsuka Eye dei Boredoms, protagonista nei Naked City, uno dei progetti zorniani più apprezzati. Non solo il modo di cantare, ma anche il modo di stare sul palco, le gesta, sono tutti elementi che Patton prenderà in prestito da Eye e che poi svilupperà a suo modo.
Dal 1998 ad oggi Patton è stato al centro di opinioni discordanti, c'è chi lo ama quasi al punto di idolatrarlo, chi lo considera un incompetente e rimpiange i tempi dei Faith No More.
Nel 1999 ha creato una sua etichetta, la Ipecac Recordings, dal catalogo molto, molto interessante.
Per i Fantômas e i Tomahawk (forse i due principali progetti in cui è coinvolto attualmente, insieme ai Peeping Tom) vi rimando ai topic e agli album recensiti nella sezione apposita.

Da solista ci ha lasciato gli sperimentalissimi e bizzarri Adult Themes For Voice (1996) e Pranzo Oltranzista (1997), a cui si è aggiunta il recente A Perfect Place (2008), colonna sonora del corto omonimo diretto da Derrick Scocchera. "Adult Themes For Voice" contiene 34 tracce create solamente con la sua voce e un microfono, registrate all'interno di diverse camere di alberghi raggiunti da Patton durante i tour effettuati con i FNM tra il ‘92 e il ‘95. Album che personalmente trovo divertentissimo.
"Pranzo oltranzista” è dedicato a Tommaso Marinetti, uno dei fondatori del movimento futurista e si avvale di grandi ospiti come Erik Friedlander (cello), Marc Ribot (chitarra), William Winant (percussioni) e John Zorn (sassofono alto). Il filo conduttore dell'album è rappresentato dal tema del cibo. Si tratta di un disco sostanzialmente ambient, una sorta di ambient da cucina.
Tra gli altri lavori principali ci sono sicuramente da segnalare i Lovage con Dan The Automator e Jennifer Charles (album “Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By” del 2001), il fantastico EP con i Dillinger Escape Plan, “Irony Is A Dead Scene” (2002), la collaborazione con il norvegese Kaada per l’evocativo “Romances” (2004), il rap di “General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners” (2005) (con gli X-Ecutioners).
Nel 2006, dopo anni e anni di attesa, arriva finalmente il progetto Peeping Tom, che vede Patton cimentarsi in un pop dalle sonorità piuttosto “mainstream”, coadiuvato da ospiti illustri quali Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, Norah Jones ed altri.
Nel 2007 Patton ha riproposto pezzi classici del pop italiano anni ’60 e ’70, con tre date in Italia, nel progetto Mondo Cane, con l’Orchestra Toscanini, Roy Paci, Enri, Gege’ Munari e altri musicisti italiani e il direttore Aldo Sisillo. Nel 2008 è previsto un nuovo tour, con date anche fuori dall’Italia.
Nel 2008 è prevista anche l’uscita del primo album dei Crudo, che non sono altro che Mike Patton e Dan The Automator.

Mike Patton è attivo anche al di fuori del mondo della musica, soprattutto nel cinema e nei videogames.
Al cinema è protagonista principale nel film Firecracker diretto da Steve Balderson e recentemente ha prestato la voce per le urla degli uomini infetti nel film Io Sono Leggenda con Will Smith.
Per quanto riguarda i videogames (di cui Patton è un grosso appassionato) ha dato la voce a diversi personaggi in giochi per Playstation 3 ed X-Box.
Curiosità: dal '94 (circa) al 2001 è stato sposato con un'italiana e aveva anche una casa nei pressi di Bologna, per questo parla un fluente italiano.

Mah, da quel poco che si sente sembra una canzone abbastanza anonima, comunque aspettiamo il disco per vedere...
Per quanto riguarda Patton, premettendo che per me è il più grande cantante da parecchi anni a questa parte (davanti ci metterei solo Garm ma lui lo metterei ovunque quindi non conta), sui suoi lavori solisti penso che se non ci fosse scritto Mike Patton o feat Mike Patton sul fronte del disco molti non li avremmo presi minimamente in considerazione, non c'è nulla di male però visto che io in primis li ho ascoltati per quello.
Onestamente se parliamo di Patton al di fuori dei "suoi" 3 progetti principali lo preferisco come esecutore per Zorn, dove tira fuori delle grandi prestazioni, che in singolo, il disco con gli X-Ecutioners si regge su un paio di canzoni, la collaborazione con Kaada e i Peeping Tom sono buoni ma alla lunga stancano mentre non vedo nessuna utilità nei suoi due dischi solisti, l'unico veramente degno di nota direi che è Lovage...
L'ho apprezzato invece tantissimo con Mondo Cane (dove canta e basta appunto) e nella sua prima colonna sonora, in cui raccoglie i frutti delle sue esperienze coi Mondo Cane
Oh comunque massimo rispetto e inchini multipli, dopo questo intervento sembra che non mi piaccia nulla, invece California è di netto nella mia top dischi di sempre e amo quasi tutti i dischi dei FNM/Mr. Bungle/Fantomas. -

Io lo amo. Non c'è nulla di quest'uomo che non mi sia piaciuto. Insieme ad Adam Jones è uno degli artisti che mi hanno cambiato la vita (musicale) e che mi hanno imparato quasi tutto quello che so. I Fantomas sono nella triade dei miei gruppi preferiti Tool - Fanotmas - NIN.
Crudo, sarà un nuovo Peeping Tom già lo sento e siccome l'ho adorato mi piacerà anche questo anche se questo pezzo lo sento più distaccato e con meno spessore.. -

Non so quasi nulla di lui, mi ha aperto un pò la mente Anna tempo fa, ma non ho mai approfondito.
Non mi ispira molto visti i pochi ascolti dati a King for a Day, ma approfondirò più avanti. E comincerei con Mondo Cane, visto che canta in italiano.
Non sapevo del fatto che aveva vissuto in Italia per ben 7 anni.

Dalla cacofonia dei lavori solisti, al rap d'avanguardia degli X-Ecutioners, dal Crossover Carnascialesco dei Mr.Bungle alle urla cerebrali delle collaborazioni con Zorn; un "curriculum" splendido di un uomo che in realtà è puro Eclettismo. Patton è il mio ideale di musicista: simpatico, geniale, profondo, cazzone nel midollo, di una classe adamantina quando occorre (vedi progetto Mondo Cane).

God, I see God.
A Perfect Place è uno dei suoi punti più alti, per il sottoscritto, a livello di solista. E' un album maturo, di peso, morriconiano e molto più evoluto rispetto all'intrattenimento ludico (personale) del futurista Pranzo Oltranzista o del pre-fantomasiano "Adult Theme For The Voices".
Michael Allan Patton è capace di studiare la musica come un moderno Alchimista, sperimentando la dimensione del suono, alla ricerca dell'essenza stessa della melodia.

Io ho sempre ritenuto che un compositore per essere grande deve essere prima di tutto un grande arrangiatore. La storia della musica è piena di virtuosi degli strumenti che in un'ottica globale perdono di interesse perchè focalizzati troppo sullo strumento a loro più consono.
Mi viene un esempio, Trovajoli, che come pianista è un virtuoso, nelle sue composizioni non riesce ad eguagliare la bravura di Morricone.
Ecco perchè voglio aspettare ancora che Michelino a livello compositovo raggiunga una maturità ancora migliore.
I semi ci sono tutti, A Perfect Place è un gran lavoro. Ma ci sono ampi margini per poter ancora migliorare.. -
